Understanding Classical Feng Shui: An Ancient System for Modern Living

The two Chinese characters that make up Feng Shui translate to “Wind-Water” and are pronounced “fung shway.” This ancient Chinese system of knowledge, refined over more than 3,500 years of meticulous observation and documentation, serves as an integral support system for creating harmony and balance within any environment.

What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui helps us understand how energetic influences from our environment—known as Qi (pronounced “chee,” sometimes spelled Chi)—impact our well-being. This life-force energy rides with the Wind “Feng” and stops at the boundary of Water “Shui.” When we create harmony and balance in our spaces, our environment supports us, making it easier to achieve what we most want in life: well-being, abundance, love, and happiness.

The ancient practitioners observed their relationship to the land they inhabited, documenting how natural environmental features like mountains and water sources, as well as man-made structures such as buildings and roads, manipulate Qi within an area. Understanding these surrounding landforms enables us to identify the quality of energy and how it impacts those living within it.

The Three Primary Objectives of Feng Shui

Classical Feng Shui serves three essential purposes:

  • Corrective – Providing potential remedies to problems we’re experiencing right now
  • Constructive – Enhancing specific areas of our lives such as wealth, health, and relationships with the goal of manifesting particular outcomes
  • Preventative – Proactively aligning with supportive energy aiming to avert potential problems

What Makes Classical Feng Shui Different?

In Classical Feng Shui, everything is about timing and alignment. Both the time and direction are key pieces of information required in assessing the alignment and quality of your space. This includes the time a building was constructed or first occupied and the direction it sits on the land. Classical practitioners analyze both the energy within a building and the energy around it because where a building sits in relation to other structures and natural formations such as mountains and water sources influences the outcomes for the occupants.

What sets Classical Feng Shui apart is that it’s specifically tailored to the person in the space. This personalized approach means the long-term results can be deeper and more impactful across all areas of your life. Classical Feng Shui offers a fresh perspective, showing you how to get into supportive alignment that can positively affect your life.

Harnessing Qi for Better Living

Even basic Feng Shui principles, applied correctly, can help us attain greater alignment with the positive energies already present in the places where we live and work. Let’s be honest—there is no perfect Feng Shui space. The intention of Feng Shui is to utilize the good energy in our homes and businesses so we can thrive. By harnessing positive Qi and suppressing negative Qi, we can have more of what we want in our lives, with emphasis on health, wealth, abundance, and both personal and professional relationships.

For some, experiencing Feng Shui firsthand is the only way to fully feel what it’s like to go with the flow. If obstacles have been keeping good energy from supporting you, it can seem as if you are fighting upstream, against the current. Proper Feng Shui adjustments and remedies help you allow in greater health, happiness, and prosperity. When you feel that you are flowing downstream in life, the results can be extraordinary.

Feng Shui for Everyone

Feng Shui is an important support system available to everyone across all walks of life—not just the wealthy or those living in luxurious communities. Although most widely used outside the United States, living more mindfully is much more than a passing trend. In fact, the next 20 years will usher in an increased interest in spirituality, transformation, creativity, innovation, and a desire to enhance our well-being overall.

A home can still be a beautiful, curated space that is satisfying from a design aspect while incorporating the necessary elements that bring the space into alignment with the individual.
